Bug-Squashing Checklist

 < Day Day Up >

Nobody writes perfect code. But with the right set of bug-tracking practices, you can make the code you release much better than the code you initially wrote:

  • Develop a list of risks to your project, and assess their relative importance.

  • Maintain a top-five risks list.

  • Triage bugs to stay focused on the important things.

  • Get help testing your code.

  • Build a network of test hardware and software.

  • Obtain and use bug-tracking software.

You can also make some changes to your software to make it easier to find and diagnose bugs. In particular, adding logging capabilities to an application can help you figure out exactly what went wrong. That’s the subject of the next chapter.
