Configuring Dial-Up Internet Access

Some organizations might not have the luxury of a permanent connection to the Internet. In these cases, you can configure the GWIA to dial an Internet service provider (ISP) for temporary connectivity. The requirements for such a connection are the following:

  • The ISP must provide ETRN service, as per RFC-1985.

  • The ETRN hostname provided by the ISP must have a static address.

  • The IP stack on the GWIA server must be able to dial the ETRN host. This can be accomplished with BorderManager on NetWare servers or Dialup Networking on Windows servers.

If these requirements have been met, the procedure for configuring dial-up SMTP access for the GWIA is as described here:

1.

Open the SMTP/MIME Settings property page on the GWIA and click the Dial-Up Settings page. The dialog box shown in Figure 10.18 appears.

2.

Check the box labeled Enable Dial-Up.

3.

Under ETRN Host, enter the name of the ISP's ETRN host.

This is the name of the host that will be receiving email for your GWIA when your GWIA is not connected.

4.

Under ETRN Queue, enter the foreign name of the GWIA.

This must be the same as the domain name that your ISP has assigned you. This is the queue the ETRN host will use to identify the GWIA when the GWIA connects to collect messages.

5.

Click OK.

6.

Go to the Scheduling property page under the SMTP/MIME tab.

7.

Highlight Default and click the Edit button.

8.

Enter the appropriate thresholds. For example, you could configure the GWIA to dial the ETRN host if there are 10 messages queued, if there is at least 500KB of mail queued, or if the oldest item queued has been waiting at least 30 minutes.

9.

Set the polling interval, under Dial parameters, to the minimum amount of time you want the GWIA to wait before checking the ETRN host for inbound mail. Because the longest you want an outgoing message to be waiting is 30 minutes, set this number to 30 minutes also. This is just an example, though; do what is best for your system.

10.

Click OK.

11.

With the new profile selected, block out the hours of the day during which you want this profile to be in force.

You should probably select all hours of the day, on all days of the week. You can also create additional profiles for lower frequency dial-up after hours or on weekends.
