This chapter introduces you to the concepts behind UDDI. Just like the SOAP standard, UDDI is a combination of communication and XML standard. UDDI Web sites such as uddi.microsoft.com allow you to search for Web Services and corporations with which you may want to do business. Internal UDDI sites can guide you to the Web Services you need to use within your corporation.
An important aspect of UDDI is that it only works as well as the people using it. If developers are not disciplined about entering information as Web Services come online, consumers can’t discover the information. In fact, at the time of this writing there was not much information on any of the UDDI Web sites and often the information that was available was inconsistent. Hopefully as more Web Services come online, the amount of information in the repositories will increase and the quality and consistency will go up.
