There are a variety of ways that VoIP is used to route phone calls over the Internet. This illustration shows a VoIP service such as Vonage that makes calls over the Internet from a home router, Internet cable, or DSL connection. A special VoIP telephone first must be plugged into the router or an Ethernet connection.
