46 Organize Bookmarks

Bookmarks are almost as easy to create as they are to use. The Bookmarks panel contains buttons for creating and deleting bookmarks, as well as an Options menu with additional bookmark- related commands.

When creating bookmarks, the most important thing to keep in mind is that the default destination for a newly created bookmark is whatever is displayed in the document pane. For this reason, it's important that you define where the bookmark will go before you create the bookmark. This might seem backwards at first, but it makes bookmark creation fast and easy, as you will see.

1.
Open the Bookmarks Panel

If necessary, click the Bookmarks tab (on the left side of the Acrobat document window) to display the Bookmarks panel.

2.
Set the Destination

Go to the page, location, and magnification that you want your new bookmark to point to. Whatever is displayed in the document pane when creating the bookmark is exactly what is displayed when the bookmark is used.

For example, if you want the bookmark you are creating to take the reader to a sidebar on page 17 of your document, navigate in the file to page 17 , change the magnification level to 200% (or whatever magnification level is appropriate to the size of the sidebar), and scroll the page so the sidebar is displayed in the document pane.

TIPS

You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B (Windows) or -B (Mac OS) to create a new bookmark.

If you highlight a block of text in your document before creating the bookmark, the highlighted text is used as the name of the new bookmark.

3.
Create a New Bookmark

Click the New Bookmark icon at the top of the Bookmarks panel, or click the Options button on the Bookmarks panel and select the New Bookmark command.

4.
Name the Bookmark

The default name of the new bookmark ( Untitled ) is automatically highlighted by Acrobat in the Bookmarks pane. Simply type in a new name and press Enter .

NOTE

After it's created, a bookmark can easily be renamed or deleted by right-clicking (Windows) or Ctrl -clicking (Mac OS) on the bookmark and selecting either the Rename or Delete command from the context menu.
