This chapter's goals were as follows :
To take a new look at old programming syntax
To examine Microsoft intermediate language (MSIL)
You have covered enough of the basics in this chapter to get you off to a good start. You reviewed some familiar concepts using the new VS .NET IDE. First, you went through several data type declarations and then you moved on to some common logic statements. The focus was on using basic, familiar syntax to answer the question "Can you use legacy-style syntax in the new .NET environment?" You then examined sample applications using both COBOL .NET and VS .NET. To wrap up the discussion in this chapter, you explored the ILDASM utility and MSIL.
This chapter focused on doing things the old-fashioned way. In the next chapter, you will make a sharp turn toward focusing on doing (some) things the "new" .NET way. Your exploration of the .NET Framework will provide many opportunities for discovery. During that exploration, you will dive much deeper into code.
