It might seem like a strange proposition to have your device automatically turn itself on and off, but it is actually a very useful feature. One of the biggest challenges in all of mobile computing is preserving battery life. Even though BlackBerry devices require far less battery power than full- size notebook computers, they still have fairly limited battery resources. For this reason, you should do all you can to help your device conserve power. One of the best ways to conserve power is to configure your device so it automatically powers itself off at the end of the day when you're finished using it.

1.
Open the Tools Screen

Scroll to the Tools icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Tools screen appears, offering a list of tools options.

2.
Open the Settings Screen

Scroll to the Settings icon and click the trackwheel. A list of options for which you can change the settings appears.

3.
Open the Auto On/Off Screen

Scroll to the Auto On/Off option in the list of settings and click the trackwheel. The Auto On/Off screen opens.

4.
Enable the Auto On/Off Feature for Weekdays

If the auto on/off feature isn't already enabled, scroll to select the Weekday field and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option . From the menu that appears, select Enabled to specify that your BlackBerry unit should automatically turn on and off at the specified times each weekday.

TIP

To quickly change an option without having to go through the two trackwheel clicks required to open a menu and select Change Option , highlight the option and press the Alt key to view a list of choices. Then scroll to the desired choice and click the trackwheel to select it. An even faster shortcut involves cycling to the next available choice by pressing the Space key; pressing Shift + Space cycles to the previous choice. You can also jump immediately to a choice by typing the first character in the choice's name .

To change the default auto on/off times, scroll to highlight the hour portion of the time in the Turn On At fieldin this example, select the 7 and click the trackwheel; then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll through the list of options to select the desired hour and click.

Scroll to highlight the minute portion of the time in the Turn On At fieldin this example, select the 00 and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll through the list of options to select the desired minutes and click.

TIP

You should set the auto on time for your device so that it comes on a few minutes before you plan on using it each day. This gives it time to retrieve your email messages so they will be ready and waiting for you when you begin using the device. Generally speaking, I like to set the auto on time for about 15 minutes prior to when I start using the device each day.

Scroll to highlight the AM/PM portion of the time in the Time field and click the trackwheel; then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll to select either AM or PM and click.

Repeat this procedure to change the time for the Turn Off At field. Your device is now set so that every weekday it automatically turns on at the Turn On At time and then turns off at the Turn Off At time.

5.
Enable the Auto On/Off Feature for Weekends

You can also enable the auto on/off feature for weekends by scrolling to select the Weekend field and clicking the trackwheel. Then click Change Option . From the menu that appears, select Enabled to specify that your device should automatically turn on and off at the specified times during the weekend.

Repeat the procedure for setting the weekend Turn On At and Turn Off At time fields. Your device is now set so that it automatically turns on and off on the weekends as well as on weekdays.

6.
Exit and Save Changes

Press the Escape button to exit the Auto On/Off screen. You're prompted to save or discard your changes. When prompted, scroll the trackwheel to the Save option and click to save the changes. You're then returned to the Settings screen. Press the Escape button twice to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key once.
