68 Add a Chart to a Spreadsheet

OpenOffice.org's spreadsheet program Calc produces excellent charts and graphs. In many documents, you'll need to include a chart and possibly a spreadsheet to make a point more clear. Business reports , for example, are full of charts , spreadsheets, and text, all working together to demonstrate the financial health of a company.

You'll find that copying charts and spreadsheets into a Writer document is extremely simple to do. Both require that you start in Calc, because Calc is the source of such charts and spreadsheets. All you need to do is select the chart or spreadsheet and drag or copy it into your document. Writer recognizes the copied chart or spreadsheet, and you can resize and format the chart or spreadsheet using Writer's tools.

NOTE

This task explains how to copy a static chart or spreadsheet into Writerthat is, one that will not change if you change the original in Calc after copying to Writer. To keep a link to the original Calc spreadsheet, select Edit, Paste Special, DDE Link to paste the chart or spreadsheet.

1.
Select Calc's Chart

Start Calc and load the spreadsheet that has the chart you want to copy to your Writer document. Select the entire chart by clicking it to display its resizing handles.

2.
Copy to the Clipboard

Press Ctrl+C or click the Copy toolbar button to copy the chart to the Windows Clipboard.

3.
Paste the Chart into Writer

Return to your Writer document and click where you want the chart to appear. Generally, plan to give the chart plenty of room. In other words, you'll usually give the chart the full margin width.

Press Ctrl+V (or click the Paste toolbar button) to paste the chart into your Writer document.

5.
Select a Spreadsheet

To bring a spreadsheet into a Writer document, you must start in Calc. Open the spreadsheet you want to copy to the Writer document. Select the entire spreadsheet or just the portion of the spreadsheet you want to copy to Writer.

6.

Press Ctrl+C or click the Copy toolbar button to copy the spreadsheet to the Windows Clipboard.

7.
Paste the Spreadsheet into Writer
