Chapter 1. Enterprise Application Development and Visual Basic .NET

I l @ ve RuBoard

Microsoft Visual Basic has long labored under the misperception that it is a "toy" language that serious developers should avoid at all costs. Certainly, Visual Basic has not been without its problems ”it has often been behind the technological curve, and advanced users have really had no choice but to learn the Win32 API in order to really spread their wings. But Visual Basic .NET addresses these concerns.

The focus of this chapter is the enterprise application development process and how Visual Basic .NET can finally facilitate rather than impede that process. I'll begin with a discussion of enterprise applications and the development process and then look at Visual Basic .NET and how it fits into the overall enterprise development picture. The overarching goal is to demystify how Visual Basic .NET fits into the process of developing more sophisticated or complex applications in a way that wasn't previously possible.
