Lab Exercise 2.1: Installing a New SUSE Linux Server

Up to this point, this study guide has focused on giving you a general overview of Linux. The goal is to give you just enough knowledge to get your own SUSE Linux server installed. After this, most of our work will be done on the server itself. We can't proceed until this is done.

To complete this exercise, you will need the following items:

  • A lab PC ” This PC must meet the specifications listed in Chapter 1.

    Note

    Be sure to make a backup of any data on this server that you want to preserve! The installation we are going to perform in this lab will overwrite ALL data on the drive. As an alternative, you might want to consider using VMWare Workstation from VMWare, Inc. Once installed on a Windows 2000 or XP workstation, it allows you to install multiple guest operating systems that run in a window on top of the Windows host operating system. See http://www.vmware.com for more information .


  • Your copy of SLES 8 ” This is included with this study guide.

Be sure your system is configured to boot from the CD drive first. Use your BIOS' CMOS Setup program to configure it to do this.

To complete this exercise, do the following:

  1. Boot your system from the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 CD.

  2. In the Installation screen, press the function key that corresponds to your highest possible screen resolution. For example, if you want to select 1024x768, press F5 . If you encounter resolution problems, try a lower resolution setting or try Text mode.

  3. Select Installation .

  4. In the License Agreement screen, select Accept .

  5. In the Language Selection screen, select your language and then select Accept .

  6. In the Installation Settings screen, make sure the keyboard layout and the mouse settings are correct for your hardware.

  7. Select Partitioning and then select Create Custom Partition Setup .

  8. Select Next .

  9. Mark your hard disk drive and then select Next .

  10. If you receive a message asking you to use the remaining free space on your hard disk, select No .

  11. Select Use Entire Hard Disk and then select Next .

  12. Scroll down and select Software .

  13. Select Detailed Selection .

  14. Make sure only the following product groups are selected (deselect any items that are not in this list):

    1. Gnome System

    2. KDE Desktop Environment

    3. Simple Webserver

    4. LSB Runtime Environment

    5. Help & Support Documentation

    6. Graphical Base System

    7. YaST2 Config Modules

    8. Analyzing Tools

    9. DHCP and DNS Server

    10. SLES Administration Tools

  15. In the Filter drop-down list, select Search .

  16. In the Search field, enter gettext and then select Search .

  17. In the right frame, mark the gettext package.

  18. In the Search field, enter locate and then select Search .

  19. In the right frame, mark the findutils-locate package.

  20. Select Accept .

  21. Scroll down to and select Time Zone .

  22. From the list presented, select your time zone and then select Accept .

  23. Select Accept to continue.

  24. When prompted to start the installation, select Yes, Install .

  25. When prompted, insert the UnitedLinux CD 1 in your system's CD drive and select OK . Wait while the files are copied .

  26. When prompted, insert the UnitedLinux CD 2 in your system's CD drive and select OK . Wait while the files are copied.

  27. When prompted, insert the SUSE Enterprise Linux 8 CD 1 in your system's CD drive and select OK . Wait while the system initializes.

  28. When the root user configuration screen appears, enter a password of novell , then select Next .

  29. In the Add a New User screen, create a user account using the following information:

    • First name ”Student

    • Last name ”Student

    • User login ”student

    • Password ”novell

  30. Select Next .

  31. In the Desktop Settings screen, verify that the correct video board and monitor have been detected .

    Note

    It's recommended that you use a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 .

  32. Mark Graphic Desktop Environment and then select Accept .

  33. If a printer warning appears, select Skip Detection .

  34. Configure your network board as follows :

    1. Select Network Interfaces .

    2. Select Change .

    3. Make sure eth0 is selected, and then select Edit .

    4. Select Static Address Setup .

    5. In the IP Address field, enter an appropriate IP address for your network.

    6. In the Subnet Mask field, enter an appropriate subnet mask for your network.

      Note

      If your server will reside on a network at your place of employment, be sure to get permission from your organization's network administrator to put this server up. Also, consult with the administrator to secure a static IP address assignment. They tend to get a bit testy if you arbitrarily grab one and start using it without their knowledge .

    7. Select Host Name and Name Server .

    8. In the Host Name field, enter CLE1 .

    9. In the Domain field, enter CLE.com .

    10. Select Next .

    11. Select Routing .

    12. In the Default Gateway field, enter the IP address of your default gateway (if you have one).

    13. Select Next .

    14. Select Next again.

    15. Select Finish .

  35. Review your installation settings and then select Next . The system will now reboot.

  36. When the system has rebooted, select gnome from the Session Type drop-down list.

  37. Authenticate as root with a password of novell .

  38. If you see an error message related to the image for the terminal icon, select OK . Then complete the following to correct the error:

    1. Right-click the terminal icon (it looks like a bare foot ) and then select Properties .

    2. Select the No Icon button.

    3. Scroll down and select gnome- term -linux.png (it looks like a seated penguin) and then click OK .

    4. Click Close .

    5. Select Actions, Logout .

    6. Select Save Current Setup and then click OK .

    7. After the system has rebooted, log in as student with a password of novell .

Congratulations! You now have a fully functional SUSE Linux implementation. In the rest of this chapter as well as in Chapter 3, we will spend some time learning how to use the system.
