A small "bubble" that appears when you rest your mouse pointer over a toolbar button or other screen element that identifies the item. Also referred to as a ToolTip .
scroll arrows
The arrows at either end of a scrollbar that you can click to scroll through your document.
scrollbar
A long bar that lets you move through your document with the mouse. Word provides a vertical scrollbar on the right side of the window and a horizontal scrollbar along the bottom of the window.
scroll box
The small box on a scrollbar that you can drag along the bar to scroll in either direction.
select
To mark text in preparation for performing an action on it. Often called highlighting . When you select text, it takes on a black background. When you select an image, selection handles appear around its edges.

Small squares around the edges of an image that indicate the image is selected.
short menu
A menu that displays only the commands you use the most frequently. When personalized menus are turned on, you see short menus by default.

shortcut icon
An icon that opens a program, folder, or file. A shortcut icon is just a pointer to a program, folder, or file. When you delete a shortcut icon, you don't remove the item to which it points.

smart tag
A clickable piece of text that Word recognizes as a particular type of data, such as a date, a person's name , and so on. Clicking a smart tag gives you a menu with a list of actions that are relevant for that data type.
soft page break
Soft page breaks (also called automatic page breaks) are inserted by Word to break a page when it is full and push additional text onto the next page.
spinner arrows
Small up and down arrows to the right of a text box. Clicking these arrows increments or decrements the number in the text box.
status bar
The bar at the very bottom of the Word window. The status bar contains information such as the current page number, the total number of pages in your document, and so on.
