Choosing a Printer

If you have only one printer hooked up to your computer, you can skip this section entirely. But if you’re part of a network or you have more than one printer attached to your computer, you need to tell Photoshop which printer you want to use.

For Windows users

To select a printer in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Open the Page Setup dialog box by choosing File→Page Setup or pressing Ctrl+Shift+P.

   A dialog box like the one shown in Figure 6-4 appears.

2. Click the Printer button in the Page Setup dialog box.

3. Choose a printer name from the Name drop-down list and click OK.

4. Click OK or press Enter to exit the dialog box.

   Tip

   You can also select your printer in the Print dialog box (refer to shown in Figure 6-3), but you don’t have access to paper size or paper source options.

For Mac users

If you’ve been poking around the operating system, you may have discovered that Mac OS X automatically selects your printer if you’re connected to a USB printer. If you’re on a network, you can use the Print Center to select your printer from the Printer List. But to make it even easier on you, you can also just select your desired printer from the Print dialog box by choosing File→ Page Setup or pressing z+Shift+P.

Tip

If, by chance, your printer doesn’t show up in the Printer List, go to the Print Center. If you don’t have a desktop icon for Print Center, you can find it in the Utilities folder in the Application folder.

To choose a printer in the Print Center, follow these steps:

1. Click the Add Printer button.

2. Choose the type of connection and then, depending on that connection, either select a Printer Model from the pop-up menu or enter the printer’s IP address or DNS name.

   If you’re unsure of this information, check the documentation that came with your printer.

   If any other message appears — one announcing that the printer is not available or has taken leave of its senses, for example — you very likely have a cabling problem or your printer is not turned on. Otherwise, you’re in business.
