Chapter 12. Monitoring System Interfaces

This chapter covers performance and fault monitoring for device interfaces in general. There are parameters you will want to monitor that are common to all interfaces, regardless of whether they are on a router or a switch, LAN or WAN. We will also cover some characteristics unique to the way Cisco devices manage their interfaces. Use this chapter as a general guideline to monitor your interfaces. Subsequent chapters will cover specifics for a given type of interface.

We will discuss several points on how Cisco implements management information on different types of interfaces:

  • Sub-interfaces

  • Interface counters

  • High-speed interfaces

  • Performance data to monitor

  • Fault data to monitor
