Although this effect isn't difficult, it is one that is useful. The text itself won't remain editable but any of the effects applied to it will be. To fill text with an image, follow these steps:
Open an image file. Use flower.tif from the chapter18_exercise folder if you don't have an existing image file.
Type a word using all caps. Use a solid or thick font.
Move the text over the part of the image you want to show inside the text.
Select the image and cut (Control [Command]+X).
Select the text object and choose Edit ® Paste Inside or use the shortcut Control+ Shift+V (Command+Shift+V).
Pasting an image inside text is the same as using an image as a mask. A mask is one or more objects that are grouped in a special way.
Cross-Reference | This technique works for any vector object, not just text. See Chapter 19 for more information about masking. |
All masked images display a "cloverleaf" set of four dots in the center of their group. Grab the cloverleaf to position the image within the text.
