Summary

MSPPs are changing the economics of service delivery for a number of reasons. The increased demand for bandwidth in the LAN caused by an explosion of data technology and services has prompted service providers to transform themselves. Service providers must rapidly provision a variety of services from traditional TDM circuits to next-generation data services such as metro Ethernet and storage. The high service density, flexibility, scalability, and ease of provisioning of MSPPs are allowing service providers and enterprise customers (who deploy their own private optical networks) to experience lower operational, administrative, and maintenance costs. Additionally, the service providers and enterprise customers are capable of decreasing the time required to turn up service, known as service velocity. This allows service providers to experience a lower TCO.

This enables service providers to offer customers next-generation data, storage, and DWDM technology integrated into the MSPPs, without the added cost and management of separate equipment. Thus, service providers benefit from higher margins on the services they deliver and an increase in the variety and quantity they can sell. Customers also receive more and varied bandwidth for their dollar. Thus, all parties can rejoice in the emergence of MSPPs.
