Chapter Review Questions

1:

When you download from the ITRC a patch bundle containing, for example 40 patches, how many patch README ( <patch>.text ) files should you obtain? Which of the patch README files should you read, and is there any specific information you should look out for when reading a patch README file? Once installed, you accidentally delete the <patch>.text file and the downloaded shar file. Is there any way to retrieve the patch README file without downloading the patch again?

2:

You are trying to ensure that your system does not come across any previously known problems. Would you use a proactive or reactive patching model for your systems? What is the difference between proactive and reactive patching? If you have a support contract that includes the services of a Technical Account Manager (or similarly named person) which patching model(s) will that person adopt for your systems?

3:

You are analyzing the patches on your system and notice a number of corrupt and transient patches. How do patches get into a corrupt or transient state? What is the difference between corrupt and transient , and what should you do with patches in a corrupt or transient state?

4:

How often should you run the security_patch_check utility? Explain your answer.

5:

We have created a software depot that contains software and all related patches. Over time, the number of patches for a given product will increase. We are now in a position where we have the following list of patches for ProductX:

ProductX:

  1. Patch1

  2. Patch2 (supersedes Patch1)

  3. Patch3 (added functionality to ProductX; has a co-requisite of ProductX and is co-requisite of Patch4)

  4. Patch4 (supersedes Patch2 and has a prerequisite of Patch3)

  5. Patch5 (supersedes Patch4)

If we were to install ProductX, which, if any, of the patches would be installed at the same time? Which Software Distributor options control the installation of patches when present in the same depot as the associated product?
