Section 3.4. Summary

3.4. Summary

In this chapter, you learned to manage updates and patches on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SUSE Linux Professional Workstation, and SUSE Linux. With YaST, the process is straightforward for both distributions. The update process may require downloads of hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes of data.

Naturally, if you're managing multiple SUSE computers, you'll want to keep downloads to a minimum. You can configure your own update server for SUSE Linux Professional workstations using appropriate rsync commands. After you have a local repository, you can keep it up to date fairly easily and update all the SUSE Linux Professional computers from that local repository.

While there are no public mirrors for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, the YaST Online Update Server makes it possible to cache the content locally. That is important because, as of this writing, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server updates are available only from a couple of locations in Europe. With just a little work, YaST Online Update Server can also download and cache content from SUSE Linux Professional and SUSE Linux 10.0 and later mirrors. Finally, ZENworks Linux Management can help you manage patches on various SUSE and Red Hat computers.
