Chapter 7.  Column Five: Timing

The Requirements Analysis DeliverableColumn Five

Essentially, there are three kinds of deliverables from Column Five:

  • State/transition diagrams from the business owners ' perspectives

  • State/transition diagrams from the architect's perspective

  • Essential data flow diagrams (architect's perspective)

  • Entity life histories (architect's perspective)

The business owner's state/transition diagram is a very good way of understanding the interactions of events, entity types, and processes. In addition to its use for planning systems, it is also very useful for business process re-engineering.

The architect's state/transition diagram forms a good basis for developing the entity life history, which has more detail about the nature of entity types' reactions to events.

The events that are identified in the state/transition diagram and the entity life history then can be the basis for developing essential data flow diagrams.
