Workflow Applications

Chapter Overview

Workflow applications are used to electronically route documents to people for review or online approvals. With this type of application you can eliminate the hassles associated with the delivery of paper documents. Workflow applications electronically manage delivery of documents, online approvals, and timestamps and provide the real-time status of documents. Workflow applications can be used for a variety of purposes, such as

  • Procurement requests
  • Defect management
  • Request for service
  • Action item tracking
  • Activity assignment and management
  • Help desk service request

By the end of the chapter you will have learned

  • How to create a workflow application
  • How to automatically number documents
  • How to automatically record activities in a "history" field
  • How to create an email message repository
  • How to build a system profile document to manage database settings
  • How to utilize action buttons to control document status

This chapter includes step-by-step instructions for building a Lotus Notes workflow application to manage procurement requests. However, with minor modifications, the application could easily be modified to be used for action items, service requests, or other business processes that require document routing and approval.
