Chapter 13. Using Common Command-Line Applications and Application Suites

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • Networking Applications

  • Browsing the Web: lynx

  • Mail Clients

  • Text Editors

  • Printing Tools

  • Bridging the GUI to Command Line Gap: Hybrid Software

In the last few chapters, we covered what you need to know to get around in the command-line-based BSD environment. We also introduced you to the use of simple programs. In this chapter, we cover command-line programs with more complex interfaces. If you're from a classic Mac background, the previous chapters' small building block-type programs are probably a slightly foreign concept because most Mac applications have historically been self-contained. The Unix applications introduced in this chapter will be somewhat more familiar because they are more similar to the functionally complete programs you're used to.
