Finishing the Song

team bbl

The song is nearly finished. Now all you need to do is clean up a few sections and select a couple of new loops to fill in the gaps.

Let's start by cleaning up the second section on the Synthesizer track to make room for some new loops.

1.

Click-drag the upper-right corner of the last region in the Synthetic Bass track and extend the last looped segment so it ends at the start of the 22nd measure.

2.

Select the last region in the Synthesizer track and move it to the right so that it ends at the same time as the region on the track below.

Both regions should end at the beginning of the 22nd measure.

3.

Press Cmd-L to open the Loop Browser, if it is not already open.

4.

Type 80s in the Search text field and press Return.

5.

Click-drag the 80s Dance Bass Synth 09 loop from the browser to the top track in the Timeline and place it at the beginning of the 17th measure.

6.

Option-drag the new region in the top track and drag the duplicate to the empty space on the right between the 19th and 21st measures.

Note

You could have extended this region instead of duplicating it. However, you'll be transposing this region in the Track Editor shortly. Duplicating a region makes it easier to change only the duplicated portion. Otherwise you would need to split the region when you are ready to transpose it.

You still need a transition piece to lead the song from the classic rock instrument section back to the techno sound. Let's add another Synth Bass loop.

7.

Click-drag the 80s Dance Bass Synth 05 loop from the browser to the Synthetic Bass track and place it at the beginning of the 13th measure.

8.

Press Cmd-L to close the Loop Browser.

9.

Move the playhead to the beginning of the 23rd measure.

10.

Option-drag the new region you just placed in the Synthetic Bass track and drag the duplicate so it starts at the playhead position.

11.

Play the Timeline from the 13th to the 23rd measure to hear the second techno section of the song.

Notice that using a variety of techno synth parts in combination keeps it interesting, yet you still hear the familiar synth riff that plays at the beginning of the song.

Let's transpose one of the regions to make it a full octave lower.

12.

Locate the 80s Dance Bass Synth 09 region that starts at the beginning of the 19th measure in the Synthesizer track.

13.

Double-click the region to open it in the Track Editor.

14.

Type 12 in the Region Pitch field in the Track Editor to transpose the region one octave lower and press Return.

15.

Press Cmd-E to close the Track Editor.

16.

Press the left arrow several times to back up the playhead a few measures.

17.

Play the revised techno section of the song.

The last task in finishing this song arrangement is to edit the final doubled guitar part so that instead of overlapping, they take turns playing one after the other.

18.

Locate the Ambient Guitar 01 region that starts at the 25th measure on the third track from the top (Electric Guitar track).

19.

Click-drag the upper-right corner of the Ambient Guitar 01 region to the left to shorten the entire region by one full looped segment.

20.

Press Cmd-S to save your work.

21.

Listen to the entire song to hear your finished arrangement.

Congratulations! You just arranged an entire song from scratch using basic and advanced song-arranging techniques.

Remember, a page full of words does not make a story, just like a lot of notes played together doesn't make a song. Plan your songs as you arrange them. They should have parts that repeat, such as the verse and chorus, and subtle variations between the repetitive parts to keep them interesting.

In the next lesson, you'll learn about mixing your song and using advanced editing techniques in the Track Editor.

Project Tasks

Since you did such a great job arranging this song, you and the song both deserve some hearty applause.

1.

Open the Loop Browser and find the loop called Crowd Applause 01.

2.

Place it on the lowest track starting at the beginning of the 27th measure.

3.

Play your song one more time with the applause.
