Reset your handheld

Not responding?

If your handheld isn't responding to your stylus, that doesn't necessarily mean it has crashed. First, try digitizing. Select Home > Prefs > Digitizer to recalibrate your stylus. Also make sure your handheld has a charge. You may think it's been charging when it hasn't.

Your handheld is remarkably stable, but sometimes an application, a sudden impact, or other factors can make it freeze or crash. To get back in business, you have to reset your handheld. Before you do, read these pages to learn the safest ways to do it and how to avoid doing it in the first place. If your handheld does freeze, you'll know exactly what to do.

What to try before you reset

First steps

If your handheld seems frozen, try turning it off and on. If a particular application keeps freezing, the problem probably lies with that application. Delete it. If you use freeware or shareware, be sure to check out online reviews and reliability ratings.

Check versions

Incompatibility between different versions of applications and Palm OS® software is a common cause of crashes. On the Home screen, find version information at App > Info > Version. Then check with the app vendor about compatibility.

Delete new software

Some software can make your handheld crash. If your handheld keeps crashing, try deleting anything you've recently added or loaded. Go to Home > Menu > App > Delete to delete the app in question. Next, synchronize to delete it from your backup files.

Two types of reset

When to do it

What it does

How to do it

Soft

Handheld appears to be frozen.

Handheld stops what it's doing and starts over. All of your information is retained.

The cap of your stylus unscrews to reveal a reset pin. Press the pin into the pinhole on the back of your handheld. If it doesn't work, try pressing it twice quickly.

Hard

Soft resets don't work, or you want to erase all the info on your handheld.

Warning: All the info stored on your handheld will be erased. A hard reset also wipes out the username associated with the handheld. (But if you sync, you can restore it all. See "Get your info back," below.)

Use the pin, as with a soft reset, but press the power button at the same time. Release the pin, and when the logo screen appears, release the power button. At the warning, press up on the navigator.

Find the reset

The reset pinhole on your Tungsten E handheld is on the back, at the bottom of the serial number label. The word "RESET" is directly above the pinhole.

Paper clip

If you've changed your stylus, use the tip of an unfolded paper clip to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld.

Support help

Go to www.palmOne.com/support for more about resets and when to perform them. Type in "reset" as the search term.

Get your info back

If you do a hard reset, all info is erased from your handheld. However, provided you've synchronized your info with your computer, that doesn't mean it's lost forever. After the hard reset, simply sync with your computer to restore all your info.

Selling your handheld?

If you sell your handheld, erase all your info by doing a hard reset. Let the new owner perform an initial sync.
