About This Chapter

In this chapter, you ll learn how to perform some advanced programming tasks that don t fit neatly into any other category. Although you can successfully create Web applications without knowing the topics covered in this chapter, the lessons found here are an important part of mainstream Web programming, and they will help complete your skill set.

Before You Begin

To complete the lessons in this chapter, you must:

  • Be comfortable creating Web applications using server controls and server-side code.

  • Be somewhat familiar with using Microsoft Windows dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) and Component Object Model (COM) objects in an earlier programming language such as Microsoft Visual Basic version 6.0.

  • Have some experience with a scripting language, such as Microsoft Visual Basic, Scripting Edition (VBScript) or Microsoft JScript. If you ve never used a scripting language, you should review the VBScript User s Guide or JScript User s Guide topics in the Microsoft Visual Studio online Help before beginning Lesson 4.
