Backup and Restore System (BARS)

A Cisco backup application used for backing up data on a Cisco CallManager publisher.



backup CallManager server

A CallManager server that IP phones only register with if the phones' primary CallManager server becomes inaccessible.



B-channel

An ISDN bearer channel, which carries voice, data, or video.



binary

A series of 1s and 0s, which can represent data, voice samples, or video samples.



bipolar 8-zero substitution (B8ZS)

A method of encoding binary 1s and 0s that represents a byte containing all 0s by creating a couple of bipolar violations at specific bit positions.



bipolar violation

An error that occurs when two consecutive voltages have the same polarity.



broadcast storm

Occurs when broadcast packets circle the network forever, consuming bandwidth and switch processor resources.



buffer

A storage space inside of a router.



Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA)

The maximum number of active calls in a phone system during the busiest hour of the day.



busy signal

A combination of a 480 and 620 Hz tone, with on/off times of .5 sec/.5 sec, which indicates to the caller that the called party is on the phone.
