Acknowledgments

Peter Blackburn

I've now known Peter for many years. During that time, he's been my technical rock. He keeps me on track in any number of areasselflessly providing his time and expertise whenever and wherever he can. He's a close friend, far beyond being a technical mentor. Peter's greatest qualities are his insight, honesty, and integrity. He stridently challenges all of usdevelopers and citizens aliketo protect ourselves against those who would steal, pilfer, and vandalize our data, intellectual property, and the things we've worked so hard to achieve. He's shown me cracks in the security strategies under discussion and how easy it can be to get inbut his scruples prevent him from capitalizing on those flaws. I'm just glad he's on "our" side. As a result, he's been hired by some of the largest firms in the world to review their systems to help fill those chinks in their armor. I don't know that I could have written this book without Peter. He has helped me make sure the technical details are right and kept me on track with some of the uglier aspects of Visual Studio and SQL Serverlike C# and (ugh) XML. Peter, thanks.

Microsoft Development Teams

I was very privileged throughout the writing of this book to have a direct access to key members of the development teams at Microsoft. Yes, some of this access is due to my status as a Microsoft MVP, but some of it is because I consider many of these people friendsI've worked with them for many years before and after my "retirement." In some ways, this relationship has been symbioticas I point out issues, the team either tells me they'll fix it, they show me why it's not an issue, or they put it on the stack of issues to fix one day. I've seen this interaction result in better products and certainly enabled me to produce a book of much higher quality than would otherwise be possible.

When the book was ready for technical review, many of the people on the Microsoft campus were busy grinding out the next versions and service packs of Visual Studio and SQL Server. No, I don't think this effort was simply an attempt to make my latest book obsoleteat least I hope not. The same was true for many others who still provided some of their time to provide feedback and encouragement. I appreciate the help they were able to provide over the two years it took to write this book.

The Addison Wesley Team

Of course, the book would not have been done at all without you folks. Thanks for putting up with me and my strange ideas and unreasonable demands. Included in this list are John Fuller, John Wait, Karen Gettman, Curt Johnson, Elizabeth Hurley Peterson, Andy Beaster, Eric Garulay, Neil Rowe, Mark Renfrow, and a host of others. Thanks, all. And thanks for getting the book through the production cycle in record time. Please strike this last line if we don't make the November 6th date. ;)

Marilyn Vaughn

Marilyn has (again) helped keep the grandkids, cats, and salesmen out of my office while I wrote this final book. She was there to listen to my incomprehensible accounts of how the day was going and to nod at the right time. She was there to keep me out of trouble when I went on the road and only collapsed once while shopping on the strip in Las Vegas. Thanks.

Victoria Ballard (George) and Chrissy Vaughn (Fred)

Ladies, you are my finest achievement. Since you have your own lives, you can't take the time to review or copyedit or make sure I'm not offending the people in some small town or major country anymore. But the lessons you've taught me over the last few decades are sewn into the fabric of all I write. I am very proud of both of you. Thanks.
