Take 3

NOTE

Track 3: (Ch 3) Strings

Sequence Parameters box: Qua 1/8 note

Instrument Parameter box: Cha 3, Prg 48

Transport Bar: (L) 17.1.1 (R) 21.1.1

Follow these steps:

  1. Record the string part (Figures P5.10 and P5.11). Note the accent on the first eighth note in each measure. Play this with slightly more emphasis than the other notes. Visualize the string section bowing this figure and transfer that to your own playing. Imagine yourself actually playing in that string section. It may sound crazy, but that's how it's done! Logic will receive these accented notes at slightly higher velocity values.

  2. Check these velocity values in the Matrix Edit window. Click on a note and the Info Line appears. If you underplayed the accented notes, increase their velocities by clicking on them with the Velocity tool (Figure P5.12 right) and scrolling the value in the Info Line.

We now have another short ostinato figure ready for repetition and variation.

  1. Save Song compare with project5/5.3a.

  2. Copy and paste the string sequence (bars 17 21) to bar 21 and glue the two resulting objects together.

  3. Copy and paste this new sequence (bars 17 25) to bar 25. Once again we have two string sequences.

  4. Select the second sequence (bars 25 33) and as we did with the guitars, transpose it down a perfect fourth (5) in the Sequence Parameters box, and use Functions > Sequence Parameter > Normalize Sequence Parameters to make it permanent.

  5. Select all the sequences on all the tracks between bars 17 and 33. Copy and paste them to bar 33. We now have 48 bars of music.

  6. Save Song compare with project5/5.3b.

Let's review things so far. We have set a nice background scene through the use of repetitive ostinato figures and limited harmonic variation. Nothing here to distract the game player while he noodles around the murky dockyard looking for treasure maps. Even so, to repeat it again would run the risk of sending him to the land of nod. We need some melody, but nothing too intrusive . A fragment lasting around four measures would be ideal. Choice of instrument? What about clarinet? Nice and dark when played in the lower register.
