1.4 Summary

1.4 Summary

A computer system consists of several hardware and software components. The I/O devices are necessary to read or write data to and from memory to the appropriate external device. Application software is a related set of programs that the user interacts with to solve particular problems. System software is a set of programs that control the hardware and the application software.

Compilation is the task of translating a program from its source language to an equivalent program in binary code (possibly machine language). When the program executes in a computer, it reads the input data, carries out some computations, and writes the output data (results).

To fully understand the development process, it is necessary to have some knowledge about the general structure of a computer system.
