Sooner or later you are probably going to run into a problem while trying to create a Team Project. Some of the errors may be easy to fix, such as a simple permission change. Others might be slightly more complicated. In this section, you will touch on some of the basic permission and network errors you may encounter while trying to create a Team Project.
For more information, you should consult the MSDN Online Help section entitled New Team Project Wizard Warnings and Errors (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms244126.aspx). Also, you should look to the MSDN Forums (http://msdn.microsoft.com/forums) for information and help.
Permission errors are probably some of the first errors you will encounter. The following table contains some error messages you may encounter and possible solutions for each:
Error Code | Description | Possible Solution |
---|---|---|
TF30016 | You do not have permission to create a new SQL Server Reporting Services site on the server. | Your user account needs to be added to the SQL Server Reporting Services Site Administrator group and Content Manager group. See Chapters 2 and 4 for more information. |
TF30034 | You do not have permission to create a new Team Project. | You have the Create new projects permission, but are encountering a permission error elsewhere, such as with an IIS virtual directory. Check the project creation log for the specific error information and set the permissions appropriately. |
TF30172 | You do not have permission to create a new Team Project. | Your user account needs the Team Foundation Server Create new projects permission. |
TF30277 | You do not have sufficient permissions on the Windows SharePoint Services to create a new site. | Your user account needs to be added to the Windows SharePoint Services Site Administrator group. See Chapters 2 and 4 for more information. |
Network issues can also be a common source of problems when creating a Team Project. The following table contains some error messages you may see:
Error Code | Description |
---|---|
TF24023 | Team Foundation Server Configuration Failure. The New Team Project Wizard work item component could not connect to the Team Foundation Server. |
TF30005 | The New Team Project Wizard group security component could not connect to the Team Foundation Server. |
TF30015 | The New Team Project Wizard could not connect to the specified SQL Server Reporting Services server. |
TF30022 | The New Team Project Wizard could not connect to the Windows SharePoint Services server. |
TF30032 | The New Team Project Wizard common structure component could not connect to the Team Foundation Server. |
TF30320 | The New Team Project Wizard could not retrieve the list of team projects on the Team Foundation Server. |
These issues can be caused by various things, including the client computer not being connected to the network, a problem with the network, or the server you are trying to connect to being offline.
To fix this, you should first check that the client computer is connected to the network and can at least see the servers on the network. Next, confirm that the server in question, be it the data tier server or the application tier server, is up and running and connected to the network as well. Finally, review the project creation log for information related to the error. (Remember, it is located at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\ VSTS_TeamProjectCreation_YYYY-MM-DD_HH.MM.SS.log.)
Don't forget to draw on the resources of your Team Foundation Server Administrator, the MSDN Help, and the MSDN newsgroups to solve your problem!
