Hearts is a trick-based game, like Spades or Wizard, but the object is to have the lowest score at the end of each hand. One player puts down a card, and all other players must follow suit; if a player doesn't have a card of the matching suit, any card can be played. The highest card played takes all cards; there is no "trump" suit. Each heart is worth one point, the queen of spades is worth 13 points, and the jack of diamonds is worth -10 points; all other cards have no value.

Normally, the object of Hearts is to stick your opponents with as many points (hearts) as possible. However, if one player takes all the points in a hand, it's called shooting the moon ; that player gets zero points, and everyone else gets 26 points.
