Why are deleted data items still showing up in the page field?

Problem

You deleted a data item from your data source and refreshed your pivot table. However, the data item still appears in your pivot table. In the example shown in Figure A.7, you see four regions, including Midwest, in the page field.

Figure A.7. The issue here is that the Midwest region does not exist any longer, and your data source does not have records tagged as Midwest. Your pivot table is holding on to this data item in its pivot cache.

Solution

To clear these phantom data items from your pivot table, completely remove the field that contains the old items (in this example, the Region field) from the pivot table. Refresh the pivot table and then drag the field back to its original position. The phantom data items will be gone.
