Version 2.0 Visual Studio Major Subdirectories

Housekeeping Tasks

It is time to perform two housekeeping tasks before you proceed any further:

Task 1: Create a Shortcut

When you install one of the new 2005 Visual Studio version 2.0 C# compilers on your PC, there is no provision for placing a shortcut icon on your desktop. To create one, follow these steps:

  1. On the desktop, double-click on My Computer to bring up the list of drives on your computer. Click on the C: hard drive, which brings up a list of the major subdirectories on the drive.

  2. Double-click on Program Files to display a large number of folders. Double-click on the Microsoft Visual Studio 8 folder to reveal several principal folders that support all compiler languages in the new 2005 Visual Studio suite.

  3. Double-click on Common7 , then on IDE .

Visual Studio 2005 (Home or Professional Edition): Within the IDE subdirectory, right-click on the devenv executable file, which is about 212 K. devenv contains the IDE main window. A pop-up menu appears; click on Create Shortcut to create a shortcut at the bottom of the existing list of files and folders in the IDE subdirectory. Drag the shortcut to the desktop and name it something like Visual Studio 2005 or Visual C# . This icon will be your entry point into the IDE.

C# 2005 Express Edition: Right-click on VCSExpress.exe , which is about 178 K. VCSExpress.exe contains the IDE main window for this edition. This file is easy to spot because it has a tiny green icon to the left of the filename. A pop-up menu appears; click on Create Shortcut to create a shortcut at the bottom of the existing list of files and folders in the IDE subdirectory. Drag the shortcut to the desktop and name it something like C# Express . This icon will be your entry point into the IDE.

During installation, all three of the new 2005 C# compilers will create a subdirectory within My Documents to house the projects you create. The subdirectory is C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects. This is the subdirectory that the IDE defaults to whenever the programmer chooses to open an existing or new project.

Task 2: Display Extensions

If your PC is set to display filenames without the extensions, this will hamper your work in the IDE. You can reset your PC so it displays full filenames with extensions by doing the following:

  1. Move to the desktop, click on My Computer , then on < Owner s > Documents .

  2. Click on Tools in the main menu, Folder Options in the submenu, and the View tab at the top of the Folder Options window.

  3. Move downward in the Advanced Settings list in the lower half of the window to the Hide Extensions for Known File Types item. Uncheck this item so all the file extensions will appear on your filenames.

  4. Press Apply and then OK to exit.
