Just as no person is an island, virtually no server is an island. Of course, you might come across the occasional server that requires no interaction with other computers, but this is by far the exception, not the rule. Even if a server does not provide a service to client machines, the ability to remotely configure the server can make or break a server-based application.

Think about where servers are located these days. In most businesses, the servers are situated some distance away from the people who might need to monitor them. Even on my home network, the server is in another room, and it has no attached monitor. Thankfully, I can accomplish virtually everything I need to do with the server by using a server-based application that allows configuration from a remote workstation.
