This chapter has covered the general range of automated, autonomous malicious software. While reading it, we hope you've also come to understand the process by which these malwares propagate ”in particular, how poorly designed server and client software facilitates their spread. In some places we might be accused of being moderately melodramatic, but the malware problem is largely a social one, and the incredible number of users who remain ignorant of the consequences of their software choices drives us to be sometimes rather strident in our attempts to communicate. Users need to be educated ; users need to understand the software they use, both for the benefits that it provides and for the problems it creates; and users need to make an informed choice regarding this software. We're trusting that after you're informed, you'll make a good choice, and take your responsibilities as a member of the networked community seriously.
