Exporting a Project as a QuickTime Movie

GarageBand projects that contain a movie file can be exported as a QuickTime movie. Exporting a project as a QuickTime movie includes both the video and the soundtrack you created. The Video Sound track that came with the original movie file is also included in the soundtrack unless the track is muted when you export the movie. Let's export the finished Alaska Sunrise project as a QuickTime movie. First, you can determine what type of compression settings you'd like to use in the Export pane of the GarageBand preferences. By default, the project is exported using the current movie compression settings. Compression settings are stored as part of the GarageBand project until you change them while the project is open.

1.

Open the project 2-2 Alaska Sunrise Final from the Lesson_02 folder.

2.

Choose GarageBand > Preferences, then click Export.

The Movie Settings are located in the middle of the Export Preferences pane.

The information below the Movie Settings pop-up menu shows the image size, audio information, and the estimated size of the specific file you plan to export.

3.

From the Movie Settings pop-up menu, choose the Full Quality setting.

At the Full Quality setting, the finished project will be around 59.6 MB. Later if you'd like to export a smaller version for an email or the Web, you can go back in and change the export settings.

4.

Close the Preferences window.

5.

Choose Share > Export as QuickTime Movie.

The Export QuickTime Movie window appears.

6.

Save the project as Alaska Sunrise to your Desktop. Click Export.

You'll see a series of three progress alerts for creating mixdown (mixing all the audio tracks down to a stereo pair), converting, and compressing the movie.

7.

When the export is finished, press Cmd-H to hide GarageBand. Locate the exported file on your Desktop.

8.

On your Desktop, double-click the Alaska Sunrise movie file to play it in QuickTime Player.

9.

Quit QuickTime Player when you are finished looking at the movie.

As you can see, it's incredibly easy to export a scoring project from GarageBand as a QuickTime movie.
