Notes

1. PMBOK, 3rd edition, Appendix F.
2. It is not just in the PMI's approach to project management that this splitting out of the charter and the scope statement happens. PRINCE2 and the APM methodology are the same, although the terminology is slightly different, for instance PID in PRINCE2 instead of project charter.
3. Redacted from the definition in the New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd edition, as implemented in Apple Dictionary application, v. 1.0.1. Copyright 2005 Apple Computer, Inc., USA.
4. Coleridge, Samuel Taylor (1772 1834): The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
5. Why is 'Gantt' not capitalized in full whereas 'PERT' is? Gantt is a proper name, of Mr Henry Gantt, whereas PERT is an acronym, for Project Evaluation and Review Technique. Does it matter? If you write the words as 'Gantt' and 'PERT', you have nothing to lose and you may gain by demonstrating your knowledge of project management. If you do otherwise, you have only downside risk, but it's more important to focus on getting the project done on time and on budget than on this kind of detail.
6. Throughout this book we tend to use the term 'business need', by which we mean a legitimate need of the business, including needs that are primarily regulatory. We also mean by this term the legitimate needs of non-business organizations, such as the charitable, voluntary, government and supra-national sectors all of which in practice understand this term in their own context.
7. We are grateful to our former colleague Ian Major for relating the origin and meaning of this term.
8. Again, we are grateful to our former colleague Ian Major for relating the origin and meaning of this term.
