Moving Layers


Move Layer One Pixel

Menu: Edit Transform Numeric

Both: Arrow keys

As long as the Move tool is active, the arrow keys move a layer one pixel in the direction of the arrow key you choose. If any other tool is active, hold down the (Cmd) [Ctrl] key, and then use the arrow keys.

Move Layer 10 Pixels

Menu: Edit Transform Numeric

Both: Shift + Arrow keys

As long as the Move tool is active, holding down the Shift key and then pressing the arrow keys moves a layer 10 pixels in the direction of the arrow key you choose. If any other tool is active, hold down the (Cmd + Shift) [Ctrl + Shift] keys, and then use the arrow keys.

Move Target Layer Up

Menu: Layer Arrange Bring Forward

Mac: Cmd + ]

Win: Ctrl + ]

Move Target Layer Down

Menu: Layer Arrange Send Backward

Mac: Cmd + [

Win: Ctrl + [

Move Target Layer to Top

Move Target Layer to Bottom

Win: Ctrl + Shift + [

Note: If the file has a Background layer, the target layer will stop above the Background layer. To move a layer below the Background layer, you must convert the Background layer to a layer that supports transparency first.

Center When Dragging from One File to Another

Mouse: Shift + drag from one document to the other

If you want the selection or layer from one document to end up in the middle of the document to which you are dragging it, hold down the Shift key and drag the item to the target document. Let go of the mouse before letting go of the Shift key.

Note: If the canvas sizes of the two documents are the same, holding down the Shift key places the dragged item in the target document in the same position as the original document.

Register Items When Dragging from One Document to Another

Mouse: Shift + drag from one document to the other

If you want the selection or layer from one document to end up in the same position in the target document to which you are dragging it, make sure that they both have the same canvas size. Hold down the Shift key as you drag the item to the target document. Let go of the mouse before letting go of the Shift key.
