Automatically Configuring QoS with AutoQoS

Optimizing a QoS configuration for VoIP can be a daunting task. Fortunately, Cisco added a feature called AutoQoS to many of its router and switch platforms to automatically generate router-based or switch-based VoIP QoS configurations. With a single command, AutoQoS can analyze a router interface (that is, determine the interface's bandwidth and encapsulation type) and apply appropriate QoS features, such as LLQ, LFI, cRTP, Classification, Marking, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) notifications, which could alert an administrator in the event of too many dropped voice packets.

On a switch platform, AutoQoS can enable such features as WRR (for queuing), configuring CoS queue mapping (for example, placing voice traffic in a high-priority queue), and interface trust states (for example, where the switch only trusts incoming CoS markings if a Cisco IP Phone is connected to the interface).
