Publishing

Publishing in your personal portal or personal content space will require updating the repository with the metadata associated with the content. For instance, your content will be defined using the metadefinitions developed by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DMCI), which states that "The DCMI is an organization promoting the widespread adoption of interoperable metadata standards and developing specialized metadata vocabularies for describing resources that enable more intelligent information discovery systems"; see http://www.dublincore.org for additional information.

The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set is a set of 15 descriptive semantic definitions. It represents a core set of elements likely to be useful across a broad range of vertical industries and disciplines of study. The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set was created to provide a core set of elements that could be shared across disciplines, or within any type of organization needing to organize and classify information. It includes common cataloging information, such as the following:

  • Description Contains a textual description of the content.

  • Subject The subject of the document.

  • Creator Identifies the creator of a document, such as the author.

  • Publisher Identifies the publisher of the document.

  • Date The date the content was created.

  • Type The type of content, such as an article or a book.

  • Language The language the document was written in.

  • Format The media format of the content: text, video, and so on.

By using an extensive array of metadata elements to describe your content, searching and organizing can be drastically improved. But more importantly, information can be accessible not only to other users, but also to programs and software agents.
