Set Up

For this exercise, you will need a Windows PC that is installed in a network.

Exercise

In this lab, you will examine your network and record its features.

Examining Your Windows 98 Workstation

To examine your Windows 98 workstation,

  1. Boot to the Desktop and use the following to open the network configuration tab:

    Start Settings Control Panel Network Configuration Tab

    Record the Network Card installed:

    (The name of the network card is displayed by itself after the protocols that are being used.)

  2. Select File and Print Sharing and record the resources being shared:

  3. Select the Identification tab and record your computer name:

    Also record the workgroup name:

  4. Select the Access Control tab and record the access control enabled:

  5. Return to the Desktop and open My Computer. Observe the Drive C: icon in the My Computer window. If the drive C: icon has a hand under it, the drive is shared on the network. Is your drive C: shared? Y N

  6. Use the following to display your TCP/IP configuration information:

    Start Programs MS-DOS Prompt

  7. When the DOS Prompt opens, type winipcfg.

  8. Note the IP address configuration (you might have to scroll through the protocols to accurately see LAN configuration parameters):

    IP address:

    Subnet mask:

    Default gateway:

    DNS:

Examining Your Windows 2000 Workstation

To examine your Windows 2000 workstation,

  1. Boot to the Desktop and use the following to open the network connections:

    Start Settings Network and Dialup Connections

  2. In the Network and Dialup Connections screen, right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

    Record the network card installed:

  3. To observe document sharing, open My Documents and highlight a folder with a hand under it. The hand indicates a shared folder. Right-click Folder Sharing and then click Permissions.

    Is full control given? Y N

  4. To see all the shares on your computer, right-click My Computer and use the following:

    Manage System Tools Shared Folders Shares

    Record the shares:

  5. Use the following to display your computer and workgroup name:

    Start Settings Control Panel System Network Identification

    Record the computer name and workgroup name:

  6. Use the following to display your TCP/IP configuration information:

    Start Programs MS-DOS Prompt

  7. When the DOS Prompt opens, type ipconfig /all.

  8. Note the IP address configuration:

    IP address:

    Subnet mask:

    Default gateway:

    DNS:

Examining Your Windows XP Workstation

To examine your Windows XP workstation,

  1. Boot to the Desktop and use the following to open the network connections:

    Start Control Panel Network and Internet Connections Network Connections

  2. In the Network Connections screen, right-click Local Area Connection, choose Properties, and click the General tab.

    Record the network card installed:

  3. Use the following to access the document sharing:

    Start My Documents Share This Folder

    Is the Share This Folder on the Network option checked? Y N

  4. Use the following to display your computer and workgroup name:

    Start Control Panel Performance and Maintenance System Computer Name tab

    Record the computer name:

  5. Return to the Desktop and open My Computer. Observe the Drive C: icon in the My Computer window. If the drive C: icon has a hand under it, the drive is shared on the network. Is your drive C: shared? Y N

  6. Use the following to display your TCP/IP configuration information:

    Start Programs MS-DOS Prompt

  7. When the DOS Prompt opens, type ipconfig /all.
