As we have seen, there are two ways to approach using Linux. You can use the shell commands or you can use a graphical interface such as KDE. Most Windows users find that KDE has a familiar feel and is easier for them to adjust to. However, a basic working knowledge of shell commands is essential for many basic administrative tasks, which we will delve into later in this book.
It is important that you be familiar with the material in this chapter before proceeding to subsequent chapters. Being comfortable with finding what you need in KDE, and at least a cursory familiarity with the shell, will be essential later in this book. It is recommended that you take some time now to go back and experiment a little with both the KDE and the shell, just to ensure that you are comfortable with both.
