Section B.5. University and College Courses

B.5. University and College Courses

Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

E. Dijkstra

The above epigraph may explain why no universities or colleges appear to have courses that discuss software development environments in any detail. Programming courses will usually have some documentation about their local development environment, but no discussion of why it was chosen. Some adult education courses may cover some of the tools discussed here, but usually without very much context.

If you do know of any academic courses that discuss how to create a practical software development environment, I'd be very interested to know about them. Maybe you're interested in teaching others what you know about this subject? Such a course would probably discuss SCM tools, build tools, testing tools, bug tracking systems, documentation, and releasing software.
