Conclusion

WS-Attachments and DIME offer a good first stab at providing a mechanism for XML-based Web services to be able to send attachments that are external to a SOAP message. While Microsofts intentions for supporting DIME-based attachments have become unclear as this book goes to print, I hope that future versions of WS-Attachments will describe more precisely how to reference an attachment from the primary SOAP message. Also, the security of DIME should be improved by giving us a mechanism for generating and attaching a digital signature of a DIME record. Although much attention is paid to streaming DIME messages and less attention is paid to referencing attachments, WSE offers a reasonable managed code solution for sending and receiving attachments with SOAP messages. In future releases of WSE, Im looking forward to better integration between the DIME message headers and the primary SOAP message as specified in WS-Attachments as well as better integration with WS-Security support.
