Because Contribute is meant for a variety of people who do not necessarily have Web design and development experience, the program has very little sophistication when it comes to markup. Text formatting uses font tags and the like. You can't edit style sheets, and although layer content is editable, the layers themselves are not.
As a result, it becomes imperative to have a style guide or other method with which to achieve conformance. The site designers and developers, if adhering to standards, can provide editors with guidelines as to which Contribute features to use and which to not use.
What's more, if compliance is a concern, either content editors should be given some guidelines on how to validate a page and make edits external to Contribute, or the designers and developers working on the site should perform validation tasks .
