Hebei Province is situated in the northern part of the North China Plain, to the west of the Bohai Sea. It borders on Liaoning Province in the north-east and on Inner Mongolia in the north and north-west. Mountains account for 35 per cent of the total area, highlands north of the Great Wall for 12 per cent, and plains, hills and basins 50 per cent, and the coastline extends for about 500 kilometres. It has a total area of 187,700 square kilometres and has a population of 66.99 million. The provincial capital is Shijiazhuang. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.3.1.
