Foreign direct investment increased by 27.1 per cent in 2000. However, the rate of increase in the total contract value of equity and contractual joint ventures was negative while the FDI in wholly foreign-owned enterprises increased sharply by 243.5 per cent.

The total value of foreign-invested enterprises in 2000 was RMB121.664 billion, an increase of 25.6 per cent on 1999. By the end of 2000, a total of 13,615 foreign-invested enterprises had been approved, involving a total contract value of US$39.272 billion, of which contractual foreign capital comprised US$31.346 billion, while the total of foreign capital actually used amounted to US$15.881 billion.
