Adding Spin and Fade Behaviors

The first watch is almost complete. All it needs is a nice spin and a fade in and out. Why a spin? One of the oldest tricks in filming product shots is to slowly spin or rotate the object as the camera creeps in (slowly zooms closer). Spin doesn't mean spin around like a top. What you're trying to achieve is more like a bride showing off her gown with a slow quarter turn to the right or a new car on a turntable in the showroom.

The Spin behavior in the Dashboard consists of a circle divided into quarters; it works somewhat like the circle for the Throw behavior. The object always starts at the top center of the circle; then you drag an arrow from the starting point to any other point on the circle to create the spin. If the arrow moves clockwise, the object spins clockwise the same distance as the arrow. If the arrow moves counterclockwise, the object spins counterclockwise the same distance as the arrow.

Half spin clockwise (180°)

Full spin clockwise (360°)

Let's use the Spin behavior to add a quarter spin clockwise (90 degrees) to the watch.

1.

Press Cmd-2 to open the Library tab.

2.

Press the spacebar to begin playback, if your project is not already playing.

3.

Drag the Spin behavior from the File Browser and drop it on the watch object in the Canvas.

4.

Press D to open the Dashboard, if it's not already open.

5.

Drag the arrow in the Spin Dashboard clockwise one-quarter spin (90°).

The combination of throw, grow, and spin have created a nice arcing movement toward the right that draws attention to the watch in a classy "check out the cool watch" way.

NOTE

The spin amount is often described in clock time to make it easy to understand, such as the 3 o'clock position for 90 degrees and the 6 o'clock position for 180 degrees.

The last Basic Motion behavior that you'll add to the watch is Fade In/Fade Out, which you have already used in previous lessons.

6.

Drag the Fade In/Fade Out behavior from the File Browser and drop it on the watch in the Canvas.

The watch fades in at the beginning and then out at the end. Perfect!

7.

Press Cmd-S to save your progress.
