7.2 What You Can't Do with a .Mac HomePage

While the Web is a wonderful thing, there are a few things you cannot do with your .Mac HomePage, some of which are restricted, either legally or technologically.

The following technologies are not supported by .Mac's HomePage service:

  • Perl and other programming languages used for CGI; you cannot run executables on the .Mac server

  • PHP

  • MySQL and other web databases

  • You cannot host your own domain name from your iDisk; instead, your site is served from your iDisk's Sites folder from http://homepage.mac.com/ membername

  • Server-side includes

Basically, anything that requires server-side processing cannot be done within the realm of your .Mac HomePage. You can, however, use client-side technologies such as JavaScript, Java, and Flash, since web browsers (the clients ) can handle these.

To make sure you stay within bounds, you should read (and re-read) the .Mac Terms and Conditions, found at http://www.mac.com/1/membership_terms.html. This page includes details that specifically apply to what you can and cannot do with your .Mac HomePage. If you violate any of the acceptable use terms, Apple can terminate your .Mac membership without notice or issuing a warning first.
