7.1 Planning Your HomePage

 <  Day Day Up  >

Before you set out to start building your HomePage, one of the first things you should do is come up with a game plan of what you'd like to have on your site, and who it's intended for. Since the .Mac services is for personal use, Apple has given you plenty of options for building a HomePage that allows you to extend your digital life and share it with your friends and family.

This doesn't mean that schools , nonprofit organizations, and businesses can't put up a .Mac HomePage ”you can and many people do ”it's just Apple's perception on who uses .Mac and how.

Some things you can use your .Mac HomePage for include:

  • A place to show off your digital images (photos or otherwise ), or maybe the movies you create with iMovie.

  • A way to let your friends and family keep on top of what you're up to

  • Provide easy access to files you want to share with the world

  • Create and post your r sum on the Web

For an example of what you can do with your .Mac HomePage, you can either examine mine (http://homepage.mac.com/chuckdude), or go to Steve Jobs' HomePage (http://homepage.mac.com/steve). Of course, my r sum isn't as flattering as Steve's, but it gets the job done.

Building a .Mac HomePage from Windows

While some may think that the HomePage tools are for Mac users only, think again. If you're using a Windows XP system, you can use the iDisk Utility for Windows XP (see Appendix C) along with Internet Explorer 6 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp) to build and manage your .Mac HomePage.

This makes it even easier for people who use a Windows machine by day and a Mac by night to have full access to the .Mac services. All you need to do is point IE to the main .Mac HomePage site (http://www.mac.com/homepage), log in using your .Mac member name and password, and then start building!
