Configure and troubleshoot hardware profiles
Problems with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of hardware devices account for a significant number of the issues that you will face as a desktop support technician (DST). Supporting and troubleshooting hardware means installing and configuring devices, keeping device drivers updated to ensure optimal operation, troubleshooting hardware issues, and removing devices when they are no longer connected to the computer.

Before you begin this chapter, you should have a basic familiarity with working in a Microsoft Windows-based operating system and with the types of hardware that are typically used on a computer running Windows XP. You should also have a computer running Windows XP Professional.
