Creating an iDVD 3 Project

Apple expects that at some point everyone will have a Mac equipped with a DVD-R drive (DVD-Recordable, which Apple calls a SuperDrive). If you do own one of these machines, you can use iDVD.

However, iDVD 3 will only run on a SuperDrive-equipped Mac running Mac OS X 10.2 or later that excludes comparable systems without SuperDrives, even if you own a third-party DVD burner.

To create an iDVD 3 project:

  1. Click the iDVD button under the Shelf to switch to the iDVD pane.

  2. Click the Create iDVD Project button (Figure 16.3).

If any clips in your movie are sped up, slowed down, or reversed, iMovie displays a dialog with the option to render the clips (Figure 16.4), which redraws them at a higher quality than the preview you see during normal playback. If you choose the Proceed Anyway option, those clips may flicker or otherwise look bad when you play back the DVD. Similarly, if the project isn't saved, iMovie gives you that option, too.

When those steps are completed, iMovie launches iDVD 3 (if it's not already running), and switches to it (Figure 16.5).

  • iMovie 3's DVD integration works only with iDVD 3. If you don't own iDVD 3, or don't have a system that will support it, iMovie displays a warning dialog. You will need to export your movie first; see "Exporting for iDVD 2" on the next page.
